Eligible students are those enrolled at Ahlia University who have completed at least one full academic year of studies.
Mobility can take place during the third or fourth year of undergraduate studies.
You can apply during the Open Call period (September to November), at least a year before the planned mobility. For example:
- If you have completed your first year of bachelor’s studies, you can apply at the beginning of your second year for mobility to take place in the first or second semester of your third year.
- If you are in your third year, you can apply for mobility to take place in the first semester of your fourth year.
Master’s students cannot apply for exchange due to the one-year duration of their programme. However, PhD students can apply for a semester-long research stay abroad under similar conditions. Please contact the Directorate for Communications and International Relations to discuss your specific case and design the most suitable arrangement for your mobility.
Yes, credits earned at a host university can be transferred back to Ahlia University and counted toward your degree. To ensure this, you must have a valid Learning Agreement signed before your study stay and approved at the end of your stay.
Exchange students typically stay for one semester, but you may opt to extend your stay for up to one full academic year.
No. Exchange students continue to pay tuition fees only to Ahlia University and are not required to pay additional tuition fees at the host university.
Depending on the framework of the mobility, such as Erasmus, you might be eligible for monthly scholarships. In other cases, Ahlia University may offer partial or full tuition fee waivers during the mobility semester, depending on individual circumstances.
A Learning Agreement is an official document that outlines the courses you plan to take at the host university and the equivalent courses they will replace at Ahlia University. It requires approval from both institutions and ensures that the credits you earn abroad will be recognised upon your return. This binding document is mandatory for both exchange and visiting students. A template is available in the downloads section.
An International Academic Coordinator is a member of Ahlia University’s teaching staff who assists students in selecting equivalent courses at the host university and aligning them with Ahlia’s curriculum. They also guide students in completing the Learning Agreement and provide preliminary approval. Final approval is granted by the Directorate of International Relations (DIR).
Ahlia University is your home university, where you are enrolled and will receive your diploma.
The university abroad where you will study during your exchange is referred to as the host university.
Ahlia University provides information about accommodation options shared by partner universities but does not assist in finding accommodation or bear responsibility for any related issues. Students are required to arrange their own accommodation during their mobility stay. We strongly advise students to contact their host universities as soon as their mobility is confirmed to organise their stay effectively.
Yes, health insurance is mandatory for studying abroad. The specific requirements vary by country and host university. Some may require a specific insurance plan or proof of coverage for medical emergencies, hospitalisation, and repatriation. Students should clarify these details with their host university and arrange appropriate insurance.
If your host university is located in a country that requires a visa for Bahraini nationals, you will need to apply for one. The host university often provides guidance and supporting documents, but it is the student’s responsibility to ensure all visa requirements are met in a timely manner.
If you fail a course at the host university, it may not transfer back to Ahlia University. You will need to consult with your International Academic Coordinator and Ahlia’s Directorate of International Relations to discuss options, which may include retaking the course or selecting a replacement.
Yes, you can apply to extend your mobility period for up to one academic year. However, this requires approval from both Ahlia University and the host university. Ensure you communicate your intent well in advance to manage the administrative process.
Teaching languages vary by host university. Many partner universities offer programmes in English, but students should verify the language of instruction for their chosen courses. If another language is required, basic proficiency may be necessary.
Ahlia scholarships and financial aid typically remain valid during your mobility period, but specific conditions may apply. Students are advised to consult the financial aid office to confirm their status.
Students are expected to behave responsibly, avoid disrespectful conversations or potentially dangerous locations, gatherings, or events, and respect the culture, laws, and lifestyle of the host country. Act as an ambassador of Bahrain and your faith by conducting yourself with dignity and respect.
While you may already be aware of many cultural differences, it is important to remember that alcohol is legal and more prevalent in some regions, especially in Europe and the USA, where societies are often more liberal. Be respectful and mindful of these differences while adhering to local laws and customs. Host societies are accustomed to very diverse cultures, so respectful behaviour will ensure a positive experience.
Yes. All countries where Ahlia has partner universities have significant Muslim communities, accessible mosques, and a general awareness of Islamic culture and lifestyle. If you are visiting as an individual student, research the local environment and Muslim communities in the chosen country. Ahlia will support you in addressing any concerns with the host university.
As an exchange student, you will have access to all services available to regular students at the host university. These may include discounts, a personal student ID, counselling services, and more. However, since offerings vary, it is advisable to contact the host university for specific information.
This depends on the regulations of the host country. Some countries allow international students to work part-time, while others have restrictions. Check the host country’s policies and your visa conditions before planning to work.
If you face any academic, personal, or administrative issues during your stay, you can contact the international office at the host university or Ahlia’s Directorate of International Relations for guidance and support. Emergency contacts will also be provided during the pre-departure briefing.
