The Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (BSPT) Programme, produce graduates to enhance the health and well-being of individuals, families, and populations through the promotion of rehabilitation and wellbeing through Physiotherapy services. The programme is carefully crafted to introduces learners to foundation knowledge and skills in the first and second year with practice application in class in preparation for developing mastery of skills in third and fourth year. Learners will undertake clinical training in third and fourth year of the programme in various healthcare settings including private and public healthcare facilities across the country that will provide further opportunities to apply knowledge and skills, while recognizing the relevance of ongoing learning in the context of supervised Physiotherapy training. Learners are trained to appreciate and develop their understanding and application of knowledge and skills in a structured practice setting under the supervision of registered Physiotherapists. Emphasis is placed on learners in developing their confidence and competence as independent practitioners. In the final year of the course, learners will undertake a relevant research project/ capstone project of their choice as a requirement for the completion of the Programme.  Knowledge and skills in problem solving, communication, lifelong learning, team and collaborative work, ethical practices and valuing diversity in practice settings are qualities emphasized and developed throughout the Programme.

A1.   Concepts and theories

Demonstrate an advanced understanding of key principles, theories and concepts of biological, physical, physiological, and behavioural sciences in relation to Physiotherapy which form the foundations of Physiotherapy practice.

Use specialised level of skills to conduct research on the latest developments, problems and controversies in the field of Physiotherapy uncovered by research.

Demonstrate adherence to professional standards and practices related to activities of the Physiotherapist.

Use specialised level of skills to apply quantitative and qualitative techniques to systematically evaluate the data/ evidence in the field of Physiotherapy practice.

Apply specialised level scientific process, including models of Physiotherapy practice in promoting individual health, public health, and well-being.

Use specialised level of Physiotherapy techniques and principles of examination to gather data for appropriate delivery of Physiotherapy services to clients/ client groups.

Study Plan

First Year

During the first year, learners are expose to range of foundation courses with generalized and some detailed knowledge and understanding related to general physics, general chemistry for health sciences, general anatomy and English for health and sciences that allows the learners to capture academic writing for medical reports and clinical self-reflection.

Second Year

In the second year, learners are provided with detailed knowledge and understanding related to Musculoskeletal anatomy, psychological aspects of disability, biochemistry, biomechanics, and introductory courses related to radiology and pathology, exercise physiology and neuroanatomy and physiology.  The learners will be exposed to applied knowledge through basic clinical practice that is conducted in Physiotherapy laboratory.

Third Year

Within the third year, learners will be provided with advanced applied knowledge and understanding and will be equipped with critical evaluation skills for diagnostics. Topics will include manual therapy, orthopedic sports and rheumatology physiotherapy etc. During the third year, the learners will be practicing clinical practice courses in healthcare medical centers/hospitals.

Fourth Year

In the last year of the study, learners will be equipped with critical knowledge and understanding as well applied knowledge related to physiotherapy, learners will be practicing physiotherapy in clinical form that includes clinical neurological medicine & surgery, neurological physiotherapy and pediatric physiotherapy. Learners will be required to produce a research project in physiotherapy as a graduation requirement.  

Entry Requirements

Admission to Ahlia University (AU) is selective based on academic achievements. Applications are welcomed from all students regardless of race, colour, gender, religion, nationality, physical or learning disability. Admission is purely based on merit.

General Requirements

To be eligible for consideration for admission to the undergraduate programmes, applicants must meet the following entry requirements set by the university in-line with Bahrain Higher Education Council (HEC) requirements. The applicant must hold a recognised and endorsed secondary school certificate or its equivalent.

Programme Specific Requirements

In addition to satisfying the general admission requirements, applicants are expected to meet the following programme-specific admission requirements for admission into the Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (BSPT).

English Proficiency Skills RequirementsApplicants who fulfill one of the following English proficiency skills will be exempted from English orientation courses:

Foundation Courses:Incase applicants require foundation courses in English or Mathematics, applicants will be required to complete successfully the foundations courses to join the BSPT programme.

Academic Scores (Tawjihi or CGPA). Specialization / Tracks
  • Minimum academic score (Tawjihi) required is ≥ 80% or it is equivalent.
  • Applicant specialization in Secondary School Certificate (Tawjihi) or its equivalent is Science Track.
Passing an Interview
  • All applicants must pass an interview conducted by the department.
  • Applicants will be subjected for an interview based on interview rubric; applicant must score minimum of ≥ 60% to be accepted.
Medical Fitness and Immunization Form – upon initial acceptanceApplicant must submit a completed Medical Fitness and Immunization form.
English Proficiency Skills Requirements

Applicants who fulfill one of the following English proficiency skills will be exempted from English orientation courses:
