University & Community

Ahlia University strives to achieve excellence in all aspects of its community engagement activities. Towards this end, in 2018/19 Ahlia created a Community Engagement Unit in order to enhance the management, monitoring and reporting of all community engagement activities, which in turn would maximise the impact of these activities across all stakeholders and strata of society. The support and coordination of the colleges, deanships and directorates allows the proper implementation of our community engagement plan with the aim of contributing positively in the development and prosperity of the community.

Community Engagement at Ahlia University is the process where students, faculty, staff, alumni and community organisations exchange information, resources and make referrals for community service and further learning opportunities. Community engagement activities form the third of Ahlia’s core functions.

For this reason, our Strategic Plan is underpinned by a Community Empowerment Plan and our activities are wide ranging, aimed at our internal and external communities.

In 2018/19, Ahlia University organised and participated in a total of 90 community engagement activities, which means an average of more than 2 activities per week, across the first semester, second semester, and summer session.

Social Responsibility

We promote active participation in constructive social change through volunteerism, leadership and civic action on the part of our faculty, staff and students; further we accept a responsibility to contribute to the growth of our society through supporting worthy causes, conducting research that strives to advance human welfare, and by preparing professionals for leadership  roles in their professions and their communities.

Deanship of Student Affairs enriches students’ campus life and community engagement by providing services and supports at the different stages in the student life at AU. Through the collaboration of various University colleges and departments as well as the student council, the University encourages student participation in the AU community engagement projects. These units also act as a go-to hub for connecting students to the resources and opportunities that will help students broaden their perspectives in ethical and social issues through community engagement activities and make the most of the student time at AU and in Bahrain.

Health and Wellness

 

The health and wellbeing of the students and staff is an important element of sustainability at Ahlia University. Students can access a myriad of services to support their mental and physical health and help them lead balanced lives here at Ahlia University. The University provides student counselling, academic advising, special services for students with special needs. Furthermore, Ahlia University provides and supports a variety of student social, cultural and sports activities through a specialized directorate within the Deanship of Student Affairs. The Directorate of Student Activities also provides other student services such as student accommodation; internship and training; career counselling; and supporting the election of the students’ representatives in the Student Council. Moreover, the Human Resources Directorate arranges many activates to help staff lead healthy lives. Staff can spruce up their work spaces and bring a bit of nature to their desks thanks which affordable plants and plant care workshops to AU’s community.

Community EMPOWER Plan

AU strives to be responsive to the social and economic challenges facing Bahrain and by extension the region through its Community EMPOWER Plan 2016-2020. This includes a strong focus on Entrepreneurship, Mentoring and Partnerships; Outreach, widening access and lifelong learning; and Expertise sharing through Research. To this end AU continuously seeks to strengthen positive, mutually beneficial relationships with business, industry, government, social organizations and the wider civic community. In this way AU optimizes the opportunities for all involved to lead more fulfilling and prosperous lives.

"Bahraini Universities Participate in the International University Sports Festival in Yekaterinburg, Russia

The Bahraini Schools and Universities Sports Union announced the participation of Bahraini universities in the International University Sports Festival, which will be held in Yekaterinburg, Russia. This participation is part of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s commitment to enhancing cultural and sports cooperation at regional and international levels.

Mr. Mohammed Ashouri, who serves as the head of the Bahraini delegation participating in the festival, expressed his delight at this valuable opportunity. He stated, “We are grateful for this wonderful opportunity to represent our kingdom’s universities at this prominent international sports festival. This event provides an opportunity to showcase our commitment to promoting international cooperation and knowledge exchange in the fields of sports and education.”

The participating universities under the umbrella of the Bahraini Schools and Universities Sports Union include the University of Bahrain, Bahrain Polytechnic, Bahrain Medical University, and the British University. The festival will feature various sports, including volleyball, boxing, swimming, and taekwondo.

The festival aims to enhance communication and knowledge exchange between the participating universities, Russian universities, and other international institutions. It seeks to strengthen global cultural and academic ties. This participation is expected to expand the prospects for cooperation and knowledge exchange in the fields of sports, education, and competition.

Mr. Ashouri added, “We are extremely excited to participate in this international festival and look forward to making effective contributions and building new bridges of sports and academic cooperation with universities worldwide. Our presence here is part of the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, may God protect him, which aims to enhance the role of our beloved Kingdom of Bahrain in promoting international cooperation and deepening understanding and communication with the ambitious world for the sake of a better and more collaborative future.”

Professor Al-Hawaj, Chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees, announced eligibility for his application to volunteer to work in the national campaign against Corona virus, expressing confidence that a large number of teachers and employees, the students and graduates of the Ahlia University were also quick to do so, and that the university. This country and loyalty to its wise leadership are two main pillars of the foundations of education and character building, whether in the private university or in our various universities and other national institutions. He added: We are proud that a large number of our professors and employees hurriedly demanded that we progress to volunteer to work in the national campaign to combat the Corona virus, it is a duty compelled by our belonging to this dear homeland and our loyalty to its leadership.

Ahlia University students provided financial support to Yoko Parents’ Care Home, within the framework of the social responsibility programs adopted by the university.

Whereas, the Student Activities Department organized a series of charitable and purposeful events, the proceeds of which were allocated to support the employees of the House, with the aim of providing university students with the values of community service and charitable participation in social work.

TOGETHER S.A.F.E” CAMPAIGN

The event was an opportunity or the team to promote their campaign outside of the university and to convey their message of love, peace and social tolerance to the whole community.

Ahlia University’s Participation in the 15th Inter College Environmental Public Speaking Competition, organized by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG).

The Inter College Environmental Public Speaking Competition was held for the first time in 2001 and since then has proven to be highly popular across the GCC region. Its primary aim is to ensure sustainability of environmental resources by promoting a positive attitude change among the young in our societies and establishing an environmentally-conscious generation. The 2015 cycle was held on November 23rd – 24th 2016 at Dubai Knowledge Village. Fifty- even teams representing Gulf universities, colleges of higher and further education participated in the competition.

Bahrain's Sports Day

The Kingdom of Bahrain organized Bahrain Sports Day on February 11, 2020, in accordance with the decision of their Highnesses Presidents of the GCC National Olympic Committee at their meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to have a national sports day in the second week. February in all GCC countries, with the participation of Ahlia [2]

World Diabetes Day

On November 16, a ceremony was held at the Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Park in Awali marking World Diabetes Day which falls on the 14th of November [3].
The SCH chief addressed the ceremony marking World Diabetes Day, being held this year under the theme: “Family and Diabetes”. He stressed the crucial role of the family in promoting prevention from the disease. He warned against the alarming increase of the prevalence of diabetes in the Kingdom of Bahrain, which has health, social and economic repercussions on the community and threatens national sustainable development, where the Ahlia students participated

The “A” Activity Credit

Ahlia University appreciates the value of co-curricular activities in developing a range of skills and
attributes that plays an important role in molding student’s personality and building confidence and
self-esteem. Undergraduate students participating in co-curricular activities are awarded an “A”
credit to encourage them in participation beyond the classroom. The “A” activity credit is a one
credit hour with “A” grade awarded to students in reference to their participation in a wide variety of activities outside of the regular classroom. The “A” activity credit is awarded to students in reference to a wide variety of extracurricular activities that include but not limited to:

a. Demonstrating an active role in university student clubs, scientific student associations and
student council.
b. Participation in university sport activities and competitions.
c. Organizing/participating in university events.
d. Attending workshops, seminars and conferences approved by the college or Deanship of student
affairs.
e. Volunteer work and Community Engagement
f. Involvement in cultural activities.
g. Peer tutoring sessions.

Ahlia Students Participate in the international Scientific Events in UK

The Founding President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Ahlia University, Professor Abdulla Al-Hawaj, praisied the visit of a delegation of the MBA students to the United Kingdom to participate in the international summer scientific events held recently by the British University of Bradford. 

Prof. Al-Hawaj claimed that the university is keen to provide all financial and moral support to its students to participate in this event and many other scientific and cultural events that enhance their capabilities and abilities in line with the strategies of the Higher Education Council, its general secretariat, and Ahlia University plans.

A delegation of MBA students from Ahlia University’s participated in the event to discuss and solve challenges related to leadership, entrepreneurship, and sustainability in the field of business, and the circular economy. The event attracted many international business students nominated from several universities, CEOs, specialist speakers, researchers, and academics, while Ahlia University was represented by 4 MBA students: Mahmood Mohammed Mansour Ali, Sara Ebrahim Ali Mohsen, Ibtisam Mohammed Jaffar Salman, and Fawzia Yousif Abdulla Zainal.

 

The student, Mahmood Mansour, won the “IMSS2022 Change Maker” award within the international summer scientific events, while the rest of the students from the delegation received praise and appreciation for their effectiveness and positivity throughout the school’s activities, which lasted for 4 days.

The scientific events included introducing the students to the summer agenda, planned events, and group exercises. They also included introductory tours of Bradford City, discussing infrastructure development plans, opportunities, and facing challenges for the sustainability and enhancement of the circular economy. The students expressed their enjoyment of this experience, thanking the college and the department of International Relations and Student Exchange at the Ahlia University for what was provided to them in this field.

The 11th Consultative Meeting with Civil Society Institutions

Success Stories Have Been Achieved Through Cooperation with Civil Society Institutions.

The Deanship of Students Affairs organised the 11th consultative meeting, conducted at Awal Ballroom at Gulf Hotel, and attended by several representatives and the leaderships, academic faculties and members of Ahlia University, as well as chairpersons of civil, charity, professional, social societies.

Prof. Abdulla Al-Hawaj, the Founding President of Ahlia  University, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, stressed on the strategic importance of providing education for everyone, in line with the United Nations sustainable development goals and Bahrain vision 2030, noting the role of civil society institutions in supporting the universities and educational institutions to achieve their goals.

 

 

The meeting included honoring the civil society institutions due to its role in community service and its positive cooperation with Ahlia University. Prof. Al- Hawaj said that the civil society institutions are the key partners in success, stressing that Ahlia University provided support to these institutions, especially in education and research fields.

Many Chairpersons of civil societies called for more partnerships and collaborations with Ahlia
University in order to enhance the educational and training opportunities for community members
especially the youths.

A University Exhibition and an Accompanying Panel Discussion

“Under the patronage of the Minister of Education and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Higher Education Council, Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma, Al-Bilad newspaper organized a university exhibition and an accompanying panel discussion. The event was attended by university presidents and leaders of higher education institutions. It took place on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at the Seef Complex in Manama.

On behalf of the minister, Dr. Diana Abdul Karim Al- uhrami, the Secretary- eneral of the Higher Education Council, inaugurated the Al-Bilad University Exhibition. The panel discussion focused on the topic of artificial intelligence as one of the university disciplines that provides promising job opportunities in the job market.
