Dr. Rafeeqa bin Rajab affirmed that today’s Gulf female poet stands at the top of her creative expression, astonishing audiences with poetic brilliance that fearlessly embraces themes of love and politics alike.
This literary discussion took place during an evocative panel discussion titled “Challenging Stereotypes: The Gulf Female Poet as an Exemplar,” on Monday, February 5th ,2024, hosted by College of Arts and Sciences at Ahlia University. It witnessed the presence of esteemed scholars and eager students, who were interested in the profound insights shared by Dr. Rafiqah bin Rajab.
Dr. Rafeeqa bin Rajab illuminated the historical constraints imposed upon Gulf female poets, limiting their poetic talents within societal and cultural confines. Yet, these restraints have faded, giving rise to a new era of Gulf female poets who mesmerise with their poetic ingenuity. Their creative poems now resound with captivating presence, with masterful employment of symbolism, metaphor, myth, and rhythm.
During the panel, Dr. Rafeeqah bin Rajab said that the Gulf female poets once forced to hide their identities behind pen names, their poetic aspirations restrained by societal norms, and they read their poems among women only. These remarkable artists have emerged triumphant, and today, they fearlessly participate in prestigious poetry competitions and reciting their poems with passion and strength.
