Knowledge Creation and human Advancement: The Role of ICT

In recent years, the rise of globalization has enhanced human capabilities to create knowledge, disseminate information and diffuse innovation. Knowledge increases productivity and improves human development by allowing people to access to global knowledge, acquire skills and transfer technology. The developing countries, in particular, can utilize Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to speed up the process of socio-economic transformation and build capacity for development. The new technologies, driving globalization, allow developing countries to meet some of the challenges facing their societies including poverty, inequality, discrimination, gender and economic stagnation.

ICTs are powerful tools which can be used to empower, individuals, groups, institutions and organizations to make decisions and foster linkages. They enable people to increase contacts, promote communication, share knowledge and exchange ideas aiming at bringing people together to discuss matters of common interest and enhance human understanding. Human development is about enlarging people capabilities to become more creative and innovative. ICTs could play a critical role in promoting human development and advancing human interconnections to share knowledge and foster sustainable growth.

The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of ICTs in knowledge creation and societal change. Modern technologies are broadening people capabilities to strengthen knowledge creation and innovation. ICTs have diminished geographical barriers by allowing knowledge, information and ideas to freely cross borders impacting people lives worldwide. Thus, building ICT infrastructures become essential for human advancement and individual welfare.
