Current Trends and Recent Advances in Biometric Technology

Ahlia University

With the growing security breaches and online frauds, authentication mechanisms go beyond simple passwords and tokens to multi-factor and biometric authentication. Biometric technology continues to gain wider acceptance in identity management for personal, corporate and national security. Many applications have been witnessed ranging from logging into mobile devices, to mobile payment, to controlling access to restricted areas, to managing attendance in work environments, to controlling access to health information, to investigating criminals, and to controlling border-crossing. Biometric authentication has been found not only convenient but also more cost effective for physical and cyber security. Biometric technology is constantly evolving and several recent advances have been witnessed in the field from the data acquisition level to the pattern matching algorithms, to the system level issues including databases, networking, security and standards. In this talk, we present a comprehensive review of the current status of cutting-edge biometric technology including applications, strengths and limitations. We also discuss recent advances related to biometric sensors, feature extraction, pattern matching, fusion of multiple sources, and decision making.
