Matar: We aspire to graduate competencies with high practical skills and abilities in research fields
The College of Arts and Science at Ahlia University has announced the launch of a new Bachelor programme in English Language and Translation, starting from the first semester of the academic year 2023/2024. This unique program serves many sectors and fields in Bahrain and the region, as it is designed in line with international standards to produce graduates with in-depth knowledge of the English language and the use of English language effectively to communicate in the spoken and written modes in a variety of social and academic situations. The programme aims to produce quality graduates that demonstrate an understanding of English literature and culture, and conduct, at a specialized level, different types of translation and interpretation, including consecutive, simultaneous, sight interpreting for different purposes.
On this occasion, the Acting Dean of the College of Arts & Science Dr. Imad Assali explained that the programme aims to equip students with deep understanding of English language varieties, distinctive characteristics and relevance to communication and translation. It also equips students with creative skills and critical appreciation of English literary texts while exploring their relevance to social and cultural attitudes.
The programme coordinator, Dr. Hammed Matar, noted that the programme provides students with advanced practical exposure in English-to-Arabic and Arabic-to-English translation with ethical and professional translators qualified for employment either in the translation industry or as freelance practitioners. It also equips students with transferable practical skills, to carry out different types of research in English and translation.
Dr. Matar noted that the study plan covers all the necessary knowledge and skills that the graduates are expected to gain by the end of their study period. The overall programme structure is 134 credits which are cascaded across 4 years of study, with English as the medium of instruction except in translation courses, where Arabic may be used when needed. The students are expected to acquire knowledge and practical communicative and professional skills in the areas of English and translation.
