The process of sourcing, shooting, writing, and editing a news story with a mobile phone while in the field is often called backpack or mobile journalism. Smartphones are the heart of mobile journalism, and are increasingly used by journalists for instantaneous creation and submission of news content for immediate consumption.

The objectives (that may be covered) in this workshop are to identify and explain the following:

  • The right tools/equipment
  • Understanding your environment
  • Shooting to tape
  • Apps for production and editing
  • Utilizing social media for distribution

About the Speaker

Dr. Fredric Kendrick is a media and communications expert known for his expertise in mobile videography, journalism, and content creation.

Kendrick most recently served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mass Communication, at United Arab Emirates University (2018 -2021), to lead the department’s TV studio and journalism efforts. At UAEU, Kendrick taught undergraduate courses in TV Production, Newswriting, and Communication Theories among others. Research interests include credentialing in local TV, and celebrity reputation management. Presented papers and panels include participation at the (2015) International Information and Communications Researchers and Scholars Conference in Havana, Cuba; (2010) AEJMC Southeast Colloquium; (2009) Graduate Research Symposium at North Carolina Central University; and (2009) Broadcast Education Association Convention.

Kendrick is a member of the Broadcast Education Association, the Investigative Reporters and Editors, and the National Association of Black Journalists.

Kendrick is a native of Montgomery, AL where he began his career in news, working in both print and broadcast, from The Montgomery Advertiser to local news stations WAKA, WNCF, WIAT, WBMA. On a national level Kendrick’s writing credits include TeenPeople Magazine, TeenZone, Channel One News, and more. A news veteran, Kendrick’s journalism spans from production to newsroom to sales departments. In 2005 Kendrick began teaching journalism at Miles College (2005-2008), before moving to the DC region to complete doctoral studies. Kendrick has also taught at University of the District of Columbia (2014-2016), Morgan State University (20152016), and Howard University (2015-2018).
