Ahlia University Admission and Entry Requirements

Admission to Ahlia University is selective based on academic achievements. Applications are welcomed from all students regardless of race, color, gender, religion, nationality or physical or learning disability. Admission is purely based on merit.

How to apply

To apply to join the University, applicants must fill in the Undergraduate Programmes Application form either by attending at the Directorate of Admission and Registration in the University or by filling in this Application Form.

In all cases, applicants must bring hard copies of all the required application documents to the Directorate of Admission and Registration in order to complete their application process.

When to apply

The university has a limited number of places available for each academic programme; hence to ensure your application is considered you should apply by the relevant deadline:

  • August 2017 – deadline for application wishing to join in the First Semester of the Academic Year 2017/2018.
  • January 2018 – deadline for application wishing to join in the Second Semester of the Academic Year 2017/2018.
  • May 2018 – deadline for application wishing to join in the Summer Session of the Academic Year 2017/2018 (Applications are restricted to transfer students only).

How we select students 

Applicants are selected from the most promising of the eligible applicants and up to the limits of available space determined by the university.

Please note that the requirements for admission stated by the University are in all cases the minimum demanded for admission, and their fulfillment by an applicant does not automatically ensue their selection.

Prior to enrolling in University, citizens of non-GCC States should secure residence permits in the Kingdom of Bahrain; otherwise their admission, granted conditionally, is subject to being rescinded at the discretion of the University.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants must demonstrate a level of English proficiency consistent with the demands of an academic programme taught and assessed almost exclusively in the English language. This can be done in one of the following ways:

  • Submission of an internationally recognized certificate of English language proficiency, e.g. Cambridge ESOL SCE or City & Guild’s Pitman Intermediate Level.
  • Attainment of an acceptable score on an internationally recognized examination of English language proficiency, typically either IELTS or TOFEL
  • Passing the University English language placement test.

Recognized Secondary Certificates

  • Bahraini secondary School certificate (Tawjihia).
  • Secondary school certificates awarded by private secondary school in the Kingdom of Bahrain provided such certificates are endorsed by the Bahraini Ministry of Education.
  • Arab secondary school certificates awarded by Arab Ministries of Education. Where applicable, the streams of these certificates are given the same consideration as the Bahraini Tawjihia.
  • Any other certificates recognized by the Bahraini Ministry of Education as equivalent to a Tawjihia certificate.

Entry Requirements for Fresh Applicants

The university accepts undergraduate programmes applicants graduating from high schools to join the university as fresh students provided that they meet the entry requirements set by the university and are in line with the Bahraini Higher Education Council requirements;

  • Applicants must hold at least a recognized and endorsed secondary school certificate or its equivalent.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a satisfactory level of English proficiency.

Documents Requirements for Fresh Applicants

  • Filled in undergraduate programme application form
  • Four recent passport size photographs
  • Copy of the applicant’s passport
  • Copy of the applicant’s ID card
  • Copy of the applicant’s secondary school certificate and graduation notification certified and endorsed by the Bahraini Ministry of Education
  • Copy of the official transcript of grades for the last three years of secondary school certified and endorsed by the Bahraini Ministry of Education
  • Medical Report
  • Non-refundable application fee of BD 20

Entry Requirements for Transfer Applicants

The university accepts undergraduate programme applicants transferring from other recognized institutions of education. Transfer applicants are eligible for consideration for admission subject to meeting the following conditions:

  • Completion of one or more semesters in the institution they are transferring from.
  • Passing the English language proficiency requirements, if required.
  • Submission of a copy of the official transcripts of the courses studied with the syllabi and description and a withdrawal letter from the previous institution of higher education.

Documents Requirements for Transfer Applicants

  • Filled in undergraduate programme application form
  • Four recent passport size photographs
  • Copy of the applicant’s passport
  • Copy of the applicant’s ID card
  • Copy of the applicant’s secondary school certificate and graduation notification certified and endorsed by the Bahraini Ministry of Education
  • Copy of the official transcript of grades for the last three years of secondary school certified and endorsed by the Bahraini Ministry of Education
  • Copy of the endorsed withdrawal letter from the previous institution of higher education
  • Copy of the official endorsed transcripts of the courses studied in the other institution of higher education with the syllabi and course descriptions.
  • Medical Report
  • Non-refundable application fee of BD 20

Transfer of Credits Rules and Regulations

Transfer applicants attempting to transfer credits earned from their previous institution of higher education may be granted credits for courses required in their new academic programme at Ahlia University according to the University transfer of credits rules and regulation which are in line with the with the Bahraini Higher Education Council transfer of credits regulations, which are as follows:

  • The maximum number of credits that an undergraduate programme transfer applicant can be exempted from based on their prior education is 66% of the total number of credits required in the programme they applied for at Ahlia University.
  • Equivalent credits/courses taken at previous higher education institution will be transferred only if;
    • The applicant has obtained a “C” grade or higher in the course
    • The course has an equivalent course in the new academic programme at Ahlia University
    • The course has an equal or higher number of credits to its equivalent course at Ahlia University.

Placement Tests

The University administers placement tests in English language and Mathematics for new undergraduate programme applicants. Students who pass these tests are exempted for the orientation programme.

Orientation Programme

The orientation programme is a one semester programme offered to undergraduate programme students who are accepted to pursue their education in one of the respective colleges at the University. The programme aims to help students develop proper study habits and skills and to better prepare themselves for the initiation of their university study. The programme consists of a core of two courses, English and Mathematics.

Applicants who graduated from high schools where English is the language of teaching and applicants transferring from other higher education institutions may be exempted from taking the orientation programme

Mature Applicants

Applicants holding secondary school certificate or its equivalent which is more than five years old are treated as mature students whose admission, irrespective of the academic programme applied to, is contingent on their passing the placement tests in English and Mathematics.

Special Needs Applicants

The University welcomes special needs applicants to any of the undergraduate programmes that are offered. The University encourages that all applicants with health condition, disability, learning difficulties or any specific special need to declare their special needs in the application form. Your application will go through a Special Needs Admission Committee which assesses the potential of the candidate to succeed in their chosen academic programme and   to consider the type of support you will require during your period of study at the University. Further, an applicant’s special needs status will be kept confidential and limited to relevant faculty and staff members only.
