ABSTRACT

Background: Current literature reported a demand for improving the healthcare (HC) service quality, in response to the high rates of patient dissatisfaction due to the high rates of physicians’ diagnostic errors. The present trend in research has focused on the utilization of virtual communities where HC professionals can share their experience and knowledge to support each other’s’ style and quality of decision making (DM). Also, scholars have stressed on the importance of the positive role play of physicians’ leadership style on their DM style. Such a role was later empirically predicted through the supportive role of knowledge management processes and emotional intelligence.
Purpose: The aim of this paper was to review and critique current literature, to rationalize the importance why the supportive role of social capital was neglected to predict the role of leadership based DM. Such a role poses as an important mile stone contribution due to a sustainable link between social capital, knowledge management and emotional intelligence holistically and harmoniously support leadership based DM; as critiqued from literature.
Methodology: This paper is a research in progress, which initiated with a thorough reviewing and critiquing of current literature, i.e. journal articles, conference papers, electronic reports and books. All these resources aided in achieving an in-depth understanding of the theories critiqued and integrated in this paper, i.e. (1) virtual communities, (2) medical DM, (3) social capital, (4) knowledge management and (5) leadership and (6) emotional intelligence. All theories were particularly focused in the HC sector in addition to understanding physicians’ virtual community environment.
Findings: As a result a conceptual framework is the outcome holistic proposed solution to depict the supportive role of social capital, knowledge management processes and emotional intelligence on physicians’ leadership based DM, in a virtual community environment.
Originality and Limitations: The proposed framework is viable for future empirical assessment. There are theoretical and practical implications pertaining to this framework also stated in this paper. Since leadership based DM is a new research area, it is not surprising why the author also observed slight literature pertain to this research area, especially in the HC sector, hence further baring opportunities for future research.
Paper Type: Literature review research paper.
